Isn’t traveling the best? We think so! And what’s better than finding a cute and fun vacation rental to stay at along the way? As designers at Blairhaus Interiors, we believe in the growing value and quality experiences that the modern day vacation rental has to offer. We are currently designing a few different rentals and thought we’d share some helpful tips that are key to making your rental space inviting, functional, stylish and, most importantly, memorable!
First, let’s talk furniture. When it comes to finding the perfect pieces to fill your vacation rental, durability is something that cannot be ignored. Keep in mind that the furniture in your rental space must be able to withstand heavy wear and tear. For this reason, our go-to upholstery company is Norwalk Furniture. Norwalk is based in Ohio and they intricately hand-make each piece with wood from the Amish community. Their furniture is made to withstand even the most rambunctious renter (or family member).
Don’t forget to keep in mind the type of fabrics you bring into your rental. With all the people you will have staying in your space, food and drink spills (or other accidents) are unavoidable. Performance fabrics are definitely recommended. Companies like Revolution, Crypton and Sunbrella offer fabrics that are cleanable, durable, fade resistant, moisture resistant and antimicrobial. With Revolution and Sunbrella fabrics you can spot clean with soap and water and even put bleach directly on the surface. These fabrics are also resistant to fading from the sun which is great for sunrooms or outdoor spaces. Crypton fabric is made with an impenetrable moisture barrier so that liquid will bead up and dribble off the surface rather than soaking into the fabric making it stain resistant, moisture resistant and antimicrobial. Using smart fabric choices will greatly reduce the amount of stains that could accumulate from some potentially messy occupants.
Next, we’ll talk about linens and bedding. You want your guests to dream about your luxurious, plush, and beautiful linens but keep in mind these two important words: machine washable! Your beautiful linens have to be practical because dry cleaning your bedding after each guest is expensive and could potentially delay your next available rental date. We suggest luxury linens that are both machine washable and high quality to withstand frequent laundering.
Rugs are also an item that should be thought about practically due to heavy usage and wear and tear. Materials such as polyester and polypropylene are going to be your best options when it comes to durability, clean-ability and stain resistance. Wool and viscose, unfortunately, are not great choices for heavily trafficked areas.
Other things to keep in mind:
- Have ceiling fans in each bedroom to ensure your guests are comfortable since each bedroom may not have its own temperature control.
- Have proper lighting throughout your vacation rental – overhead lighting, task lighting and night lighting for safety. Think about adding dimmers to overhead lighting fixtures when possible and provide table or floor lamps for task lighting. Wall sconces on dimmers in hallways and staircases make great night lights and decrease the potential of accidents.
- Ensure that window coverings provide adequate privacy – layering curtains with blinds or shades is both practical and stylish. Shades or blinds can provide needed privacy while curtain panels, whether stationary or working, provide additional room darkening, softness and noise absorption.
- Add memorable features that will make your rental stand out from the rest. This can be done with an eye-catching foyer piece, colorful works of art, a fun patterned rug, stylish décor, and so much more.
Ultimately when it comes down to it, it is essential for your vacation rental to feel warm and welcoming to everyone – a home away from home – but, don’t be afraid to have some fun with it, too. With quality, comfortability, and style, your rental space is sure to be a success!
